Compare & Despair
Have you ever found yourself scrolling through social media, only to end up feeling inadequate and disheartened by the success of other creatives in your field? If so, you’re not alone. This common phenomenon is known as the Compare and Despair Cycle, and it’s something many creatives struggle with.
The Trap of Comparison
Comparison can feel like a double-edged sword. While it sometimes provides a temporary boost of motivation, this motivation often stems from a place of lack and inadequacy. Many of my clients have shared that comparison can spur them into action, but in reality this drive often leads to exhaustion and burnout. Ideally, we want our creative energy to come from a place of expansiveness and abundance, not from a place of "not enoughness."
When you compare your journey to someone else’s highlight reel, you might feel like you’re falling short. This perception can stifle your creativity and productivity, leaving you trapped in a cycle of self-doubt and discouragement.
The Despair Spiral
Despair follows comparison closely. When you focus on what others have achieved, you may start to question your own path, talents, and progress. This negative mindset can hinder your ability to stay true to your unique vision and purpose because you are stuck in your head rather than being connected to your creativity and authenticity.
Taking Responsibility: The Key to Empowerment
Breaking free from the compare and despair cycle requires more than just awareness. It demands active responsibility and empowerment.
Here’s how you can take charge of your mindset and foster a more empowered creative life:
Set Boundaries: Decide ahead of time how much time you plan to spend on social media platforms. Set limits and stick to them to avoid falling into the comparison trap.
Be the Witness: Try to observe (without judgment) when you start to compare yourself to others and make judgments. At this point, pause and make an active choice about what you want to do next. Acknowledging these moments can help you regain control and refocus on your own path.
Thoughts become things: What we hold in mind we will manifest. So if you are thinking ‘I’m not good as good as other artists’ your brain will go searching for evidence to prove that true. Be mindful of the thoughts you are choosing to think.
Celebrate Small Wins: Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your own achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Every step forward is progress. Recognising your successes can build momentum and reinforce a positive mindset.
Practice Gratitude: Keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of what you have accomplished and the positive aspects of your journey. Writing down things you're grateful for can shift your focus from what you lack to what you have.
Set Personal Goals: Define clear, goals that are aligned with your values and vision. Focus on your progress rather than others' milestones. Personal goals keep you grounded and oriented towards your unique path.
Seek Inspiration, Not Comparison: Look to others for inspiration, not as a measure of your worth. Use their success stories as motivation rather than a benchmark. Recognise that everyone's journey is different and that inspiration can fuel your own creativity.
Cultivate a Supportive Network: Engage with a community that uplifts and encourages you rather than fosters competition. Surrounding yourself with supportive peers can create an environment of growth and positivity.
Inspirational Visualisation: Focus on Visualising your own success while being inspired by others, this creates an expansive and empowered outlook.
Empower Yourself. Stay in Your Lane.
Breaking free from this cycle and empowering yourself requires focusing on your own journey. By implementing these practical steps, you can reclaim your creative power, stay true to your vision, and thrive in your unique path.
Remember, your unique path is valuable and incomparable. We all have a distinct perspective and lived experience. When we get caught up in comparison, we lose our edge and miss out on aligned opportunities and commissions. This happens because we keep ourselves stuck in a mindset and energy of lack.
Fully embrace your uniqueness, tap into your personal magic, and watch everything unfold.
